150/102. Yikes. Doc wants to prescribe meds, but I’m anti-drug and have always overcome issues on my own, so I Google how to lower blood pressure:

Fifteen remedies

Here are 15 natural ways to combat !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

1. Walk and exercise regularly

Kinja'd!!!

Okay, I can do this. I already do. I can do it more. Sucks that winter is on the way though. The kids are older now and can be left alone which helps, and we have a doggo again which also helps.

2. Reduce your sodium intake

I will start eating MORE less salty foods. I already do. Lots of fruit and veggies so....

3. Drink less alcohol

FUCK.

THAT.

4. Eat more potassium-rich foods

Already do. will eat MORE.

5. Cut back on caffeine

This is a big one. I drink teas and sodas, so I will be cutting them out, and see how it goes.

6. Learn to manage stress

Job isn’t that stressful, compared to others I have had. Home-wise we have been dealing with the basement flooding issue, and other new-homeowner issues, so hopefully that’s a factor that will ease over time.

7. Eat dark chocolate or cocoa

FUCK YEA CHOCOLATE

8. Lose weight

This will go hand in hand with the increased exercise . I’m not like SUPER fat, but I have been around 220 (5"11') since high school.

9. Quit smoking

I do not smoke, and am very rarely around second hand smoke.

10. Cut added sugar and refined carbs

Another diet change I can deal with.

11. Eat berries

I like berries. Again, diet.

12. Try meditation or deep breathing

I tried this in between BP measurements at the doctor just now. It didn’t help. LoL.

WIll try more maybe.

13. Eat calcium-rich foods

I have cut out milk since my oldest daughter is lactose intolerant , and now I have become as well. Will supplement it somehow.

14. Take natural supplements

OK

15. Eat foods rich in magnesium

OK

Heart rate? I think we’re talking BP...

Mine is congenitally “borderline” along with cholesterol. Resting HR: 48 yesterday.

Or listen to your doctor since chances are they know more than some rando on the internet?

I have a good friend how had high blood pressure and hypertension. He is in the hospital currently after a massive stroke left him paralyzed on one side of his body, likely for the duration. He’s 44.

Listen to the doctor.

When I get my BP measured I’ll be at 135/90, a few minutes of breathing exercises and I’m at 120/75. Frankly my issue is mainly diet related. I could easily shed 10 lbs and lower my cholesterol and BP if I would cut out the foods i like (cookies, ice cream, tacos, and pizza ).

I’ll see how this goes first. If lifestyle changes cannot fix it, then on the meds I go.

Kinja'd!!! ttyymmnn > Takuro Spirit
10/05/2018 at 11:43

Kinja'd!!!0

Take the medicine.

Get your BP under control.

Start your lifestyle changes.

Then, after some time, you can wean yourself off the meds and see if the lifestyle changes have taken hold. Have you been hypertensive for a while, or is this new? Some people are “essentially hypertensive” and a reading of 150/102 is not necessarily alarming, though action needs to be taken . If you have had normal BP all your life and suddenly get this reading, it requires immediate attention. I don’t know you personally, but the problem with most people who try to treat medical conditions with lifestyle changes never do, and the conditions worsen. Or you die. So I would reiterate what I said at the top. Take the meds, get your BP under control, then work on the lifestyle changes.

Disclaimer : I am a doctor, but not that kind of doctor. I am also hypertensive, and have been taking meds for years to control it.

Get your diet right (really right, not “I’m sure it’s fine” right), increase your activity (buy a Fitbit, use it), get your body into a healthy BMI, and don’t go back to old habits once you hit great milestones.

Want to nip your problem in the bud without meds?  Do this shit right here.

So listen, your doctor is more than likely on board with these kinds of non-medical solutions. Discuss this stuff with him/her. He can be a way to vet what you read in your own research. He may also know how to combine these with medication for best effect.

I have known people who the doctor started on medication while they enacted lifestyle changes and then took them off when they lost the weight or whatever the goal was.

Wanting to use as few drugs as possible is a good thing. Just don’t let it scare you away if you do need them.

I run a few miles a week, which has taken it down a bit, but it’s always been sub-60 for as long as I can remember. BP and Cholesterol, on the other hand...I’ve done personal studies (like a year or more) that diet has almost no impact on my numbers in either arena.

I had the same issue and had the same response. I increased my exercise , totally changed my diet, cut caffeine down to just a morning drink, lost 40 lbs, and never add salt to my food.  It did jack shit.  BP didn’t change at all.  So now I’m on a low dose of lisinopril and BP is normal.  I kept all the new habits, am in the best shape of my life, and continue to try to lose a little more weight.

I will also add that there is one glaring omission from that list: Get more quality sleep. Lack of sleep is thought to be  one of the major factors that can affect BP, particularly if you suffer from sleep apnea.

I’ve been on BP meds for awhile and I want off of it. I started taking Moringa and that is dramatically helped my BP. It is a herb or grain you can eat. I drink it or take a pill.

I just need to get back to working out more and get under 200lbs as I am hovering around 220 of beef and potatoes of former Army guy. That’ll help me dramatically.

Good luck

I was not a big drinker e ither. S ame schedule most weeks, 2 on Wednesday, 1 or 2 on Saturday, maybe 8-10 ‘party’ events a year when it got up to 5 or more.

But I thinking it’s an amplifier. The alcohol seemed to increase the impact of every other choice.

I’ve beaten several medical conditions in the past just with lifestyle changes. I’ve weened myself off meds and made it work.

I am attributing the high BP as of late to stress with the house, and lack of exercise since I haven’t been off my ass as much as I used to.

I didn’t say I was going to completely ignore or stop going to the doctor . I had a full physical last week and EVERYTHING is fine except the BMI and BP.

I had high cholesterol a few years ago, and my bloodwork came back Monday and it was where they wanted it to be. I battled depression in my youth and beat that, when meds and doctors couldn’t.

If I can’t get the high BP under control I’ll give in and get meds, its fine.

I just don’t want to throw medications at all my problems. They’re not necessary in all instances.

I don’t know if calcium is going to help your BP, but you can get it from soy, almonds, salmon, and greens like spinach, collards, etc. A quick Google search will get you the info you need.

If you want to drop weight, more exercise and less sugar are key. Obviously, less caffeine is good for your BP.

And if it comes to drugs, get informed about your choices. There are many different types with different costs and side-effects.

Good luck and stay healthy!

pressure typically builds when there is no place for the expansion to go.

Soooo we make a hole and pressure will be relieved. It might go down to zero tho... so let’s look up how to bring up blood pressure....

Mine is always a tradeoff between being fit and looking too emaciated. I’m 6'2" with long limbs, so any time I get below about 190# I look too skinny for an adult. So I stay about 200# and just consider myself a runner with a fleshy weight vest :D

My mother-in-law was dealing with diabetes and high cholesterol. She lost a bunch of weight and managed to get the diabetes under control, but couldn’t do anything about the high cholesterol. Now she’s on meds.

My wife’s blood pressure goes up with her heart rate. They still haven’t figured out that one, but a simple beta blocker gets everything under control. One pill a day. Totally worth it.

Which would be a better motivator for getting it under control naturally, wanting to get off a drug or the nebulous possibility of stroke and heart attack at an undetermined point in the future? Which route has the greater risk of catastrophic outcome?

Whatever you do, set a goal BP and hard deadline. I get it, I’m anti pharmaceutical as well (if we ignore the contradiction of anti drug and anti giving up alcohol). I spent a month fixing diet and losing weight, but was still hypertensive afterward so I went in a low dose diuretic, and went on to lose more weight. I’m still only at goal BP with meds, trying to up my cardio and lose the last 15 to 20 lbs to get off of the meds .

But I know that every day with high blood pressure is a day your cardiovascular disease worsens, and some of that is irreversible. So my condition isn’t worsening while I get my house in order.
